The Right Tools at the Right Time
Speed, agility, and efficiency matter more than ever in landing top talent.
Hospitality has always been known as a sector full of opportunity and variety, but the recent lockdown and lasting effects of the pandemic have knocked the confidence of potential employees who might want to get into the industry. It is now seen that the negatives outweigh the positives: long unsociable hours don’t look as enticing when paired with a potentially unstable industry. However, the career opportunities in hospitality cannot be measured and the industry needs to ensure it is marketing itself as a rewarding and progressive option that is full of potential for those starting from the bottom to work right their way up.
Hospitality Can Be an Amazing Career Opportunity
Launching Radisson RED
In our recent Recruitment Summit, Harri spoke to a panel of hospitality leaders about the need for change in the industry. Following on from Brexit, combined with the lasting effects of the lockdown, fears over the vaccine rollout, and growing uncertainty surrounding the new variants of COVID-19, hospitality still has some barriers to overcome. Following our Recruit, Retain and Reinspire sessions, we have drawn together some common themes to illustrate the situation hospitality finds itself in now and suggest how it can evolve and grow in the future.

Despite the exodus of workers out of the hospitality industry, there are, without a doubt, infinite opportunities and great options for career progression within the sector. Businesses need to work hard to emphasise the positives to ensure that everyone, from the waitresses to chefs and head office staff, have equal and varied opportunities to upskill, branch out and develop their careers. Flexibility is key to retaining staff and the solution to this is to set the strategy now, not as an afterthought. This will encourage more people to join hospitality, knowing that there are opportunities to fit into every lifestyle, whether it’s returning parents or university students. Hospitality offers options for everyone. It’s fun, it’s vibrant, and it’s extremely varied — all components to a long and happy career.

Hospitality is fighting an uphill battle at the moment. Competing with other industries which have taken in a lot of ex-hospitality workers during the pandemic, it suddenly seems like the constant flow of workers who want to fill hospitality roles has been cut off. In 2018, UKHospitality released a report that placed hospitality as the 3rd largest employer in the UK, but currently, the number of employees within the sector are 11% below February 2020 levels.
During our retention session, speakers were talking about not underestimating the importance of upskilling, training and encouraging further learning within hospitality. Whether the employee is at entry level or managerial level, there are always options for development and progression. Our speaker panel discussed how they were enriching their management teams with multi-skills, from finance and accounting to HR and marketing. Some staff left to pursue more specialised careers as a result which was ok because the sentiment is to put their people at the forefront. Other businesses were upskilling with specialities like wine and spirits qualifications and butchery skills.
