The Right Tools at the Right Time
Speed, agility, and efficiency matter more than ever in landing top talent.
The ongoing pandemic has affected almost every role in hospitality, which is why many operators think we should use it as a reset moment. Kate Nicholls, CEO of UKHospitality believes the industry shouldn’t go back to business as usual. Instead, operators should think differently and creatively about attracting talent back into the industry.
How Does Hospitality Need to Change?
Launching Radisson RED
In our recent Recruitment Summit, Harri spoke to a panel of hospitality leaders about the need for change in the industry. Following on from Brexit, combined with the lasting effects of the lockdown, fears over the vaccine rollout, and growing uncertainty surrounding the new variants of COVID-19, hospitality still has some barriers to overcome. Following our Recruit, Retain and Reinspire sessions, we have drawn together some common themes to illustrate the situation hospitality finds itself in now and suggest how it can evolve and grow in the future.

It’s clear we need to attract new people to our sector and highlight the benefits of a job or career in hospitality. Prior to the pandemic, hospitality employed 3.2 million people and was the third-largest private sector employer in the UK. By working closely with the government, the sector can restore confidence and bounce back even stronger, so hospitality is once again seen as a dynamic and exciting sector of growth, and a provider of fulfilling careers that will help power the UK’s economic and social recovery.

Don't go back to business as usual; think creatively about hours & shift patterns and benefits provided to team members. We’ve got to use this as a re-set.

How can Operators think creatively about attracting and retaining staff?
It’s clear that Operators need to think creatively about retaining staff and attracting new people to the industry. Hawksmoor has launched a training menu, where Managers can choose what skills they want to learn and take forward to their future. Brewhouse and Kitchen are trialling a four day week.
People from non-hospitality backgrounds will need to be considered and trained up to join restaurants and hotels. Harbour Hotels Group are specifically targeting customer service people from other sectors into their hotels.
