The Right Tools at the Right Time
Speed, agility, and efficiency matter more than ever in landing top talent.
This webinar encompassed a diverse group of hotel and leisure operators with Jane Pendlebury from HOSPA facilitating the session. The event is part of a series which builds upon the second session from the Hospitality Recruitment Summit, “Retain” where we explored the importance of retaining staff at this current time. In this webinar we delved a little deeper into how hotel operators are approaching their retention strategy with a focus on why things need to change in the industry when it comes to retaining and caring for staff. You can see how this topic instigated discussion with a group of UK and European based operators.
Retaining Staff in a Post Pandemic World in Hotels
Launching Radisson RED
With eased regulations on the horizon, the focus on recruitment, retention, and engagement has never been more important. Following on from our Hospitality Recruitment Summit, to solve the short-term problems in recruitment, we take a closer look at how hotel operators are planning long-term gains such as retaining their staff, both from a well-being perspective, an operational and commercial point of view.

We are looking to engage with our culture; really re-establish our well being and allow our teams the time they need to come out of lockdown.

There are more apprenticeships in accounting and finance than there are in hospitality. This proves that there is a big gap in how we portray the industry. We have alot of work to do.

It is not acceptable to allow chefs to work all day without a break. We will stop service if it means our chefs will get a break. This isn't the case in all businesses but we need to understand our people.

My advice would be, keep going, keep moving and keep evolving. Success is never final especially where people are concerned.

Encourage your teams to question and encourage them to evolve with your business
Take mental wellbeing seriously; we need to make the environment welcoming and inviting for people coming back to work
Free uniform and free meals should be a given, not a benefit. We need to shout about how fantastic the industry is
Don't compromise culture; create a culture that you and your team want to be part of and do everything to bring it to life
We need to keep evolving and re-evaluating our businesses; success is never final, especially where people are concerned
Talk to your teams and listen to what they are saying. Encourage your leadership teams to praise their teams

Do we continue to blame Brexit as the totality of the staffing issue? No we don't. Having no students in Canterbury for our entry level roles has impacted us more

This pandemic has opened our eyes to the fact that we have to change perception of the industry and the only way to do that is with a behaviour change.

It all comes down to putting people at the forefront of hospitality. We need to convince the shareholders to put EBITDA aside and put people at the top of the agenda. We’re at a tipping point and a long term view is what is needed to rebuild the industry. We need to take wellbeing seriously and not compromise on culture.

With lockdown restrictions finally easing and staycations on the rise in the UK, hotel and leisure operators need to change the way they approach their retention strategy, fast. If they don’t, they may not be able to handle the significant increase in bookings.
